BAS ESP light

So the other day my lovely bride calls and tells me she is stranded.

I wander over.

Car starts. no lights. try to shift to drive, but you have to hit brakes to do it.

When you hit brakes, BAS ESP light comes on, and can't get it out of park. Try various things.

15 minutes later. I give up.

As a final parting shot, I hook my foot under the brake pedal and pull up HARD in frustration.

Problem solved.

I am guessing the brake pedal was somehow stuck "down". Don't know what switches were involved, but thought I'd pass it along.....

Brake Switch

I'm pretty sure your brake light switch has failed or was "out of position". It is a common failure and the part is about $13-14 at the dealer. Lots has been written along with detailed instructions and pictures to walk you through this very simple replacement. How many miles and what year and model? Good luck.

60k, and a 2001 ml 320.

since that night, she has had no problems. will be ordering the switch, but interesting how the brake light switch will strand you.
