Steering wheel has too much play, is that normal?

Hi, I have a 1999 ML320. I find that when I am driving, there is a lot of give when steering. If I am going in a straight line, I can move the steering wheel back and forth about an inch or two without any movement. Does anyone else experince that while they are driving or is this something I should look into.

It cannot be 'normal' for anything to have 'too much' play, but to answer your question, one or two inches is too much and I would suggest you have it investigated.

The problem could be due to a steering steering problem or ball joints, tracking arms, etc.

2001 ML 320 Sport Pkg.
?

I have the same question. My 2001 has too much travel also.

What can be done to modify or tighten up the steering?
