These roofs were problem from day one. Read the postings on this thread and you will see a smattering of what people have gone thru with the skyview roof.
Fyi...mine finally busted last year. Nothing dramatic - the panels started having difficulty sliding on the rails - my mechanic told me, the lifting brackets are wearing out - its $4000 in parts & labor to replace it. I just closed it & pulled the fuse on it. It gave 11 years of service. That was good enough. Just pretending it's not there anymore now. It's not worth the money & hassle to fix it.

11 years of trouble free service!!! That is something to celebrate considering all the problems people on the forum are discussing.

From my experience, I can see one thing wrong with its design. Wear & tear parts should be easier to acess & replace. Only 2 of the plates are having difficulty sliding, but there is no way of addressing individual plates.

One big reason for your reliability is that as I recall your ML is serviced in accordance with the MB recommendations. How many miles on your ML at this time?

167k miles on my ML.

The skyview actually needs a special lubricant from MB. Like $35/ounce or so...I used to lubricate it once a year & keep the leaves & debris off all the time.

After 11 years, no regrets, it's the end of life for such moving parts. The roof as such is just fine..the sliding brackets for the panels are wearing out...can't help that.

I am glad, there are no water leaks etc. that set in...I have pretty much retired the roof now. I wish MB will someday re-instate such a roof in their line up...but it is less likely though. With the advent of the curtain airbags, such roof structures are hard to design while keeping them safe...
