Dealers list of things that needs repair

Just came back from a 1-day free service clinic & vehicle inspection from the MB dealership. The report indicated what I needed to get done. Well here is the lists. Plugs...............approx...............$683.00 + tax
Trans Connector..."....................$201.00 + tax
Adaptation Reset..".....................$112.00 + tax
Left outter tie
rod align............".....................$462.00 + tax
Aux Fan..............."....................$433.00 + tax
Windows switch....."....................$308.00 + tax
A-Service............."....................$295.00 + tax
I also mention about getting the Trans-Axle (approx $200.00) and Transmission Fluids (approx $265.00) changes. I would like to do some of the work myself and find a MB Mechanic north of chicago,IL near wisconsin. The 2001 ML320 sport has 98,000 miles on it. It running good, hope to get 200,000 miles on it. Warranty up at 100k miles. None of these items are under warranty the service dealership said. Is there a good Maintenance Repair Book or Shop Manual out there that has clear instruction and diagrams (pictures). This website has been a life saver on some repairs....Thx

Why do they need to do an adaptation reset??

Just last month I did everything that would need an adaptation reset.

1. Replaced MAF (Air intake readings affected)
2. Replaced Sparkplugs (Ignition affected)
3. Replaced Fuel Filter (Fuel supply affected)

It goes without saying that the adaptation codes should be reset after all that and so I requested the SA to do it after all of above, but my SA adviced against it saying the ECU has a tendency to do funny things after an adaptation reset.

It is better to let the ECU just adapt without a reset and only if the effects of all the above (better torque/power, better mileage, smoother firing) are not noticable after the first 500 miles, should a reset be considered.

Why does it cost so much to do an adaptation reset? It should be pretty much point and click after hook up with STAR diagnosistics.

I would certainly advice that you get the whole drive train - tranny, transfer case and the front and rear differentials flushed and re-filled. It has made a huge difference in the ride quality of my truck.

I got it done at 94K miles, close to where you are...and mine's a 2000 ML320.

Apart from that, the only other item on my tranny was worn shifter bushings, which was like a $10 fix.

The prices on all the other items are about right...but if you are getting done most of it done at the dealer, that's going to hurt you...

I spent a total of $2000 on my 100K tune up...about $1400 to the dealer and $600 worth of parts for DIY (spark plugs, MAF + some appearance facelift - blinker mirror caps, chrome door handles, chrome grill strips, chrome rear hatch handle cover, chrome trailer hitch cover and polishing of roof rails) I guess, I am ready for the next 100K mile journey with it....

What's wrong with your plugs and why do they cost $683.00 to have them done?? Do the wires come with that? Mine have 164,000 miles on them and they are fine. If you're not burning cheap gas it it, they should last a long time. I get approx. 18.5 MPG in my ML AVERAGE! So, I'm not about to monkey with anything unless it needs it.

As for differiential fluids and transfer case, those are DIY's. You're talking $30.00 tops for the fluids and, of course, your time. I'd recommend the tranny fluid change. It is a must at 100,000.

Window switches for $308.00?? That doesn't sound right, either (don't they cost about $38.00 each?).

$683 for plugs at the dealer is about right...

Replacing spark plugs on the ML is labor intensive...at least 2-3 hours of labor, depending on how they do it...it doesn't help that the plugs themselves are about $15/pop and on the ML there are at least 12 of them...and I bet they change the wires too, which are about $34/pair - at least 6 of them.

We are easily talking of $300 in parts and $300 in labor...

Very much like the transmission fluid, the spark plugs are a must replace at 100K miles too....

Thanks mihir for your input. The SA at the dealership mention that a adaptation reset is recommended after all spark plugs and harness change and with the trans connector o-ring being replace. Driving style setting would be reset. cmitch mention about window switches costing at about $38.00. Is this per switch or is this the whole switch module? And where else besides the MB dealer parts department can you purchase MB parts at a discounted price? And what goes into replacing a aux fan?
