Only when you get into ML500 above do you get something like acceptable performance.

Maybe you've got an ML500 and don't realize ? ;-)

Just my opinion - based on comparing our ML430 to our little 1.6L mini cooper S.
to put this car in context with other similar 4X4's...

Figures taken from 'TOP GEAR' magazine UK:

0-60 mph in seconds:

Mercedes ML 320 V6 8.6
Mercedes ML 500 V8 6.9
Nissan Patrol 3.0d 16.4
Toyota Land Cruiser Amazon 4.7 V8 11.2
Toyota Land Cruiser 3.0d 11.5
Jeep Cherokee 3.7 V6 10.8
Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.0 V6 9.0
Range Rover 3.0d 13.4 (4.4 V8 only managing 8.3)
BMW 325 ci Convertable 8.0
BMW X5 3.0 straight 6 8.3
Audi Q7 3.0 V6 9.1
Nissan Murano 3.5 V6 8.9
Mitsubishi Shogun 3.5 V6 (top of range) 12.5
VW Touareg 3.0 V6 9.9
Volvo XC90 3.0 straight 6 8.9

oh... and MINI Cooper 1.6 s 9.1

Ml 320 noway near the performance of the Ml 500 +, but definately not a 'sloth' (lets be realistic pls) its faster or equal to pretty much most large 4X4's you commonly find on the road especially in UK, and sometimes it can suprise some modest saloons as well.

great 7 seater, satisfiying engine...

Just a few points,

As I said - my opinion based on comparing our ML430, MCS and 911 TT - the ML320 is a sloth and yes I've driven one and found it under powered for its weight. That's why I bought the V8 version.

Others have made the same observation - which equally applies to many other SUV's on the Top gear list.

It's an SUV not a sports car - so sloth like performance comes with the terrority of a 5000lb vehicle and a 3.2L V6 engine.

Finally the 0-60 time for a Mini Cooper S is a well documented 7.5 Seconds. Not sure how TG managed a 9.1 - come to that not sure how they managed an 8.6 in a 320, maybe they were torque braking the transmission for best launch.

More likely they tested an early ML320 which weighs less and thus is slightly faster ? Later models were heavier and thus slower.

All said - it's relative to what your used to. Everything seems slow compared to my 911 TT and it's just that an ML320 seems particulary slow particulary when trying to merge onto a freeway via an uphill on ramp.

BTW - I'm a Brit living in the US but all the same I'm all to familiar with Chelsea tractors ;-)

Aha that explains it, the 318i BMW - I had a 316i for a while back in the UK, so yes the ML320 would seem fast ;-)

Like I said it's all relative and what you're used to ;-)

As to where I'm from - the other side of the Pennines, ie Lancashire, takes cover flame suit on :-)

To be precise Lytham St Annes - but know York pretty well, have visited a few times, including the Steam Locomotive musuem. My great grandfather was the engine driver for Queen Victoria.

Been in the US now for 10 years, life is good and I hold dual citizenship - just in case.

Regards Tim

Kind of a heated Post here.

SLoth said.
A 5000 dollar very old ML bought sign unseen and a do it yourself guy, figure it out!!

I bought a 1999 ML330 in 2002. They have a depreciating half life of 3 years. I dont think it as being old. Mercedes builds these with a 250,000 15 year life span in mind.

Thanks for the transmission reset tip. I just did it. Will test it tomorrow.
22 MPH Hiway 16 City. Plenty of power.

Steve
