Rear Main Seal leak...

My dad has 2002 ML320. It's been fairly problem free except oil level sensor leaking and having to be replaced. To get to oil level sensor, they had to drop oil pan. Then they didn't do the oil pan gasket right and we had another leak. So we took it in for 2nd time and they got it right.

Now months after, we noticed another oil spot on our driveway. Jacked up the SUV and found some oil around transmission area. Since MB dealer is around 150 kms away, my dad took it in to local Euro specialist and get a diagnose. He said the leak is most likely from Rear Main Seal.

My dad has an appointment at the MB dealer on Monday to have it officially checked out. Car is still under warranty so my questions are:

1. Has anyone here have this problem before?
2. Warranty should cover it, right?
3. Is this labour intensive job?

Thanks

Yup, they believe it's rear main seal. Oil outside of tranny is not from tranny. They added some dye to the engine oil and they'll confirm next week for sure.(after some driving as leak is really really small, but my dad wants it fixed).

They said it's a full day job as tranny needs to be dropped down.

I'll keep you informed.

Well they popped off the tranny and found out that it wasn't the rear main seal but torque converter seal leaking.

15 hours later, she was put back together.

My dad and I are so glad we had warranty to cover this. Otherwise, it would have been atleast $1500 CDN

Heads up. If you ever see any oil between engine and transmission and have warranty, take it in rightaway!
