Stuck in Low Gear?

Anyone have their ML stuck in Low Gear and refuse to shift? Had that happen once and painfully drove it to the dealer!

I had this happen to me about a year ago. The first time it happened I was going to pass another car and it all of a sudden down shifted and then upshifted several times and finally when I slowed down it went into Low Gear (Limp home mode) and would not shift. I took it to the local dealer and they said it was the shifter column electronics, about $1500. Two weeks later it did the same thing. Two months later I took it to another dealership and they found out it was a problem with the transmission valve body. Another $1500-$2000. Good luck!

As mbenz3000 mentioned, this is called "limp home mode" - the box goes into that mode if it detects anything wrong that may damage it .. the dealer should be able to read the fault codes from the gearbox controller that should tell it what is broken.

Ive only seen it happen on my colleagues SL500 which had a physically damaged gearbox controller - Ive had a total of about 7 MB's and never had it happened !
