Can the key fob give the engine problems?

This may sound like a dumb question, but my father is insisting that the following is true and it just sounds dumb.

His 99 ML430 is having some issues, I haven't experienced it first hand but it seems like sometimes the engine bogs down when he tries to turn it on or something along those lines. He changed the Mass Air Flow Sensor, but it is still doing the same thing, he is now trying to say it's the chip inside of the key fob that is causing it.

Is there anyway that the chip in the key fob can give the ML any sort of operational issues. If so, let me know what they sound like?

A few years ago my 01 ML430 had a problem that sounds similar to yours - sometimes on startup the engine just wouldn't turn over.
The dealer said it was the computer chip in the key that was not communicating with the ignition. (??) I bought a new key for $200+ but that didn't help.
After a few more visits (and a refund) they fixed the problem, which I remember as being fairly simple. If you need more info let me know and I'll see if I can find it in my old bills.
