Help! Won't start after replacing battery

The wifey didn't close the door properly so after 3 days my 99 ml430's battery got drained. I tried jump starting it and it works. So I knew it was the battery and replaced it. After replacing it, it starts then dies. I've searched here but there are gazillions of reasons.
I'm planning on trading this sucker so I just wanted to keep my expenses to a minimum.

What would be the top 2 culprit why this is happening?

Thanks a million.

You might have fried the key when you jump started it. Try a different key. My 2 cents.

You have to buy a new one, the old one is no good now. When you jump started with the key in the ignition, it was ruined. My 2 cents.

Before replacing the batteries the key can unlock/lock the doors but not to start the truck. After replacing the batteries, it's totally dead. Tried resyncing it several times using different methods and switched the old batteries back but to no avail. Oh well, I guess it's time to get a new one.

Anyway, thanks a bunch guys for your suggestions.
