rotten eggs

got my cats replaced 3-4 weeks ago by mercedes. dont know why but it was on the bill. week later, got my cat-back exhaust set-up...and now when i floor my car, it smells like rotten eggs. anyone know if this could be a problem, or its my new exhaust, or the cats are breaking in?

Could be running too rich perhaps a failing O2 sensor, or, If your new exhaust cat back is not stock then for whatever reason that could cause it. Its the sign that something is not allowing the cats to operate correctly.

As far as the light coming on, not unless the sensor has totally failed or has degraded badly. However it is quite possible that whoever installed your new custom exhaust created a problem with the sensor as the problem began right after the exhaust install and its most likely with one or both sensors located after the cats. Don't know why you are afraid to go to the dealers as its only a matter of having them fix it and paying the bill. After all it is likely that you created the problem, own up to it and take care of it.

BMW FTW
Try using a different gas station, I have this problem with my BMW if I use mobil or 76 you can smell a sulfur smell for the exhaust. So I use Chevron only and it doesnt smell anymore, to make sure it was the gas I put another take of mobil in and right away the smell came back after a drive.

Cats often are designed to operate under a particular back pressure. By changing to a bigger exhaust you reduced the backpressure causing problems with both the cats and sensors.

You should go back the the exhaust shop. Often using a baffeled mufflers instead of flow through mufflers can increase backpreasure. Your other option is using aftermarket cats that match the rest of your exhaust system.

Egg smell is normal, means your cats are doing their job. They do that when you really hammer it.
