Open Hood Straight up

Anyone know how to open the hood so it is completely out of the way (vertical). When I go to the dealer I see a lot of cars in the shop with the hoods up that way but don't see anything in the manual. Seems to me would be easier to change the battery and work on the car that way.

The ML has a second stop for the hood. One has to pop the damper off the first one and attach it to the second stop to raise the hood to a more upright position.

When you move the struts to the second position can you close the hood?
Are there any disadvantages to leaving the struts in the second position?
I like ability to open my 98ML and 90 190E to the vertical position but only when needed otherwise I usually use the lower position.

The 98 has no "stay open" air struts, just a rod to hold it open.

sosh, I don't know if you were referring that comment to me or not. I have Both a 98ML and a 05ML. The strut question to Wolfgang was in reference to the struts in my 05ML. But thanks for the comment anyway.
98ML -- Rod for Both positions - use both positions all the time.
05ML -- Struts set to 1/2 open position
90 190E -- Single Strut that works in BOTH the lower and Vertical position without any modifications or re-adjustments. Really nice mechanism.
