Disconnect the battery Ground under the hood for ~1minute (to be safe) and this should bring things back.
Think of these MBs as Microsoft Windows - they need to be reset once in a while.
Just be sure to have the Comand radio Security Code handy because after you disconnect the battery, it will not work again until you re-enter the code.
Good Luck.

gave it a shot - no go. I also noticed the rear gate will no longer lock with the rest of the car. I wonder if one of the relays is bad.

Most likely tailgate lock actuator is bad and that too would effect the lights as it flashes only after it confirms that all doors are locked.

Tailgate lock actuator has gone bad on my 2000 ML too..
I too am guessing the hatch lock actuator is bad...this is the 3rd lock actuator that has gone bad on my ML in the 112K miles/8 years..
Does any one know of any DIY instructions around to open the hatch inner panel to get to the actuator? I am thinking of DIYing it this summer..

In my case, the lights etc. all work fine through the lock/unlock sequence - but my rear hatch will not power lock.
