Uhhohh, problem with my 03 ML500
While driving the car , my engine started making some heavy noise, and all of a sudden the steering wheel locked. I struggled to get the car home and parked it safely. Now the car starts up heavy and it sounds like a go cart running, and the steering wheel is still locked in place unless I force it to turn the wheels.
Anybody have any ideas of what might have happened???

sounds like you either broke the serpetine belt or the crankshaft pulley carrying it had cracked. check the hood and see the integrity of the belt. If it is all intact, then something is up with your power steering pump.

The power steering pump would explain the steering problem I'm happinv, but would the belt or pulley issue cause the steering issues? On the same note, would the steering pump issue casue the wierd engine noises?
Thanks for the help!

The 500's and 55's also were prone to the lower crank pulley separating from it's vulcanized side. Not sure when problem corrected but definately existed through 02-03. If belt intact then check lower pulley.

Power steering hose could have came loose also. If so, this is covered under warranty for ten years from original purchase. Towing included. My 2 cents.
