fuel gauge issues

I have a fuel gauge problem that seems a bit different from the other descriptions so far, or so I think.

I have a ML430 that I bought about 1 year ago. Since I bought it, it never registered a full tank. So I think "No issue, it still tells me the important stuff like when I am about to be empty and range to empty."

Then, one day about 4 months ago, it failed completely. The needle stays at zero (light comes on when key in P2 before start but goes off when started). The trip computer sometimes registers mileage but mostly states 0 (when it used to flash "FUEL" when it was close to empty). Now I have to fill up every time and make sure I reset the trip computer so I can measure based on range.

The fuel filter was upgraded before I bought it to the new style by the dealership.

So, since this is a little different from the 3/4 full problem, would I still start with the sending unit or could it be something else?

Also experiencing the CPU problem, but don't think they are related.

Most likely a bad sending unit so to correct the fuel pump must be replaced as it is integral with the sender.
