Adding oil to the ML

I have a '99 ML430 with about 700 miles to go for an A service. I need to add oil immediately. What weight oil (preferably Mobil one) should I use? Sorry for the question, I just don't have my manual yet. Thanks.

I can't say for the 99's since FSS wasn't into effect then. But to be safe, call the dealer (any dealer) and they'll tell you.

JAD, I would use a name brand full synthetic oil. My MB dealer uses Valvoline
5w-40. There is a list of MB approved oils
too, use your search function.
Strangely enough, Mobil 1 5w-30 and
10w-30 DID NOT make the approval list
but Mobil 1 0w-40 did. Not sure why.
The trick is, where to find a 0w-40
or a 5w-40 synthetic. Your dealer should
stock it if no one else.

JAD, can you comment on the condition of your oil under the fill cap? Any black
cruddy material?
Mine had plenty under the cap and in the fill well. But I don't feel it was excessive, but on the other hand for only 35,000 miles
I kinda do feel it's excessive.

Scott S.

I'll check tomorrow for you. I got the car with about 40k miles on the odometer just for a baseline comparison.

I'll check my owner's manual in the morning, (I'm at work now) and let
you know what oils are recommended.
But that is in 1999 and the MB oil
approval list shows all the updated
recommendations.
I noticed the Valvoline Full Synthetic
5w-40 made the list in 2000, which
is what my MB dealer uses. I'd like to
know what they used prior to that.

JAD, there is no oil recommendations posted in the ML 430 owner's manual.
It only states to consult your MB dealer
for engine oil info.
I guess I was expecting the traditional
preferred oil weight to outside temperature charts commonly seen in the
big three domestic owner's manual.
