Help needed on fuel pump control on ML430

My 1999 ML430 (78000 miles) has this problem that started recently. I think fuel filter is still original.
It doesn't hold fuel pressure in line and fuel rail to engine after engine is turned off. Fuel pump does not run to pressurize the supply when ignition key is turned to on position (2 position). Fuel pump only runs when engine is cranking or running. I need to replace fuel filter which can probably help holding pressue. But I don't understand why pump doesn't run for short time when key is turned to 2 position as most cars have that feature. Fuel pump relay seems to be fine. Any suggestions on the problem? Is fuel pump supposed to run for couple of seconds when ign. key is turned to position 2? Also is it possible to remove fuel lines from original filter without any special tool and use them for new filter? Thanks for any help.

fuel pump control

I have the very same problem, I can hear the pump pressure up for a couple of seconds when I turn key on. I have swapped the fuel pump but still it won't hold pressure on rail. I am thinking the fuel filter-pressure regulator is messed up. Let me know if you solve your problem I sure would appreciate it.
