1999 ML430 Success story

I have noticed allot of people considering a Mercedes read and post in this forum so I wanted to share a positive ML story.

I owned, since new, a 1999 ML 430 that was by far the best car I have owned. Only one problem in its entire 130000 mile life was not covered by warranty or recall. The CPS going bad at 115000 miles was the only time it did not start and run like a champ. Other than not as nice as other MB interior and a little more road noise, I loved every minute of owning that car.

We're on our second W163, a 2004 ML350. Our first was a 2001 ML430. My wife loves 'em.

our 1999 ML430 just turned 89000 miles & have had very few problems:
  • 13 pin
  • power steering hose recall
  • brakes
  • window switches
  • tie rod ends inner & outer
  • battery

To be honest, I think most of these items are wear & tear items. over all we've been very happy.

My 1999 ML430 just hit 110K miles. I've had to replace a few things here and there but overall I'm very happy with her. Of course it isn't as refined as other MB's as the OP said earlier. I do have annoying rattles and creaks. Turning up the radio takes care of that! Also the ride isn't as smooth as my mom's W211 E320. The best part though....this thing is a beast in the snow. I love it. I never have to worry about getting stuck somewhere in the snow. I plan on keeping her until 310K miles.(knock on wood)
If she dies before that then I would definitely get another W163. Maybe an ML55 this time.

I've been fairly satisfied with the ML430, so far. I bought it used in Feb.,2004, one owner with 99,000 on it. It now has 193,000 on it. I change the oil every 5k and the Transmission fluid every 60k (overdue, now). The first owner, I'm sure, wasn't happy because they had it in for over 20 warranty repairs that included power steering hose, brake light switch, defective wiper motor, leak around rear window, overhead trip computer problems, power window switch, reservoir tank, windshield washer tank, gear shift selector problem, alternator voltage reg., etc. My problems were limited to the Gear shift selector getting jammed-twice, rear hatch lock actuator, CPS, EGR and MAF up until recently, when the radiator decided to spring a leak and the power window switch assbly on the console crapped out. So, I'm fixing to r & r radiator, r & r power window switch assbly, change transmission fluid, change out upper and lower hoses and then carry it in for the lower power steering hose, again. But, honestly, I've had more trouble with all previous vehicles I've owned.

211,000 on mine and still going strong. Some small minor annoyances, most of which were mentioned here above. I did replace the tranny at 175,000.
