Side Steps

Just wondering what are some of your experiences with installing side steps.

Should I go with the metal bar type or the color matched plastic type?

Any suggestions on where I should purchase and get them installed?

Thanks for your inputs.

As far as I know, there's no "color matched plastic type". There's the chrome (stanless steel) and the black. The OEM bars are both made of stainless steel. I'm not certain the aftermarket black ones ones are stainless. The OEM's are quite expensive but look good. The report is that the steps are same height as the bottom of the door, so it's mostly for cosmetic. However, it sticks out enough to protect from all but the most die hards of door dings. The aftermarket units are usually a tad lower so one can actually step on them. I went with the MANIK bars (do a web search for MANIK) because they are less expensive compared with OEM and I don't particularly care for the MY02+ OEM steps - the steps look too tacked-on for my taste!!!

I believe he's referring to the running boards for the ML, not the side steps.

The running boards give a more 'sophisticated look' as opposed to the steps, which give a rugged look to the car. The running boards will be more expensive, especially if you buy the lighted ones.

The pic I have attached below shows the pre-02 running boards (this is an '01). From '02 they made a revised running board that is more of an all-in-one unit than the old one is, which was the main board plus two caps, one at the front and one at the back, for a total of 4 corner caps. But the design is similar.

Hi Everyone,

SORRY yes I meant running boards, I couldn't think of the proper name.

Please let me know where to buy and get them installed in Southern California. I'm looking for Best Price and Best installation places that you've incountered. Also do you know if they come pre-painted in factory colors?

Thanks,

Darkmann?

You too? Why don't we have just one forum. I know that sounds stupid.
But having the same discussions in different places?
