rolling noise, what is it?

MY 1998 ML320 is experiencing a rolling drivetrain noise that is has been getting louder over the last few months. It is not the engine or transmission as I have issolated that by using nuetral or adjusting RPM and the sounds did not change. The sound appears to not be tire related as the sound is the same when treading through fresh snow or on dry pavement.

Any ideas? Could it be a driveshaft problem or is there some lubrication that should be done?

Thanks

might be the transfer case or some type of bearing... the 98's had some issues with the transfer case. Does it shudder or grind when turning the wheel @ full lock at low speed.

Unfortunately I am also familiar with the transfer care shudder turning hard to one side or the other. I was unable to get my dealer to replace as my warranty was up in months (still under in miles) when that particular problem starting happening. They said the transfer care noise did not indicate failure but it was more of an "annoyance".
