ML320 Ignition Switch problem

I have an ML320, year 2000. Tonight while driving, the engine suddenly shut off and all the dash lights came on as if someone had turned off the key.

I tried to restrat the car, the starter turned the engine but the engine would not come on. I noticed that when I turned the key to the start position, it would not snap back when I let it go (i.e. the starter would remain engaged).

Has anyone seen anything like this before? I am thinking that it is the ignition swicth gone bad. If that is the case, do I have to change keys?

$500 later

The problem was with the cranshaft sensor. Apparently, this is a common problem with the ML. What threw me off was the ignition switch not snapping back to its regular position. I thought there was something wrong with the ignition switch and since this problem usually requires the dealer's touch, I took the car there. They charged $500 for the crankshaft sensor and a cup of cappuccino.

I understand the part costs about $80 and the labor is about $100 to have it installed.
