2003 ML500
Clicking sound when stopping and starting

Hello,

I'm new here so thank you in advance to anyone who might have some insight. I have a 2003 ML500 that is making some noise.

Whenever I start to drive, there is a clicking sound that comes from underneath the car. It just doesn't come from one spot either. There are different spots form underneath. After I'm moving it stops, but when I slow down I hear it do it once or twice as well. It doesn't make any noise when I'm sitting still or fully moving.

Any ideas?? Has anyone had this before?? Thank you again.

sounds like the torrsion bar rear mounts.. there are plastic bushings that insulate the torrsion bars in there mounts. Its a common problem on the ML(163) body .
The top of the bushing develops cracks in it which cause the cracking/snaping noise
when the body shifts.

Two ways you can tell if this is the problem drive slow and hit the breaks with someone listening outside the car to see if the noise is coming from the center of the car around the rear of the torrsion bars. Or the simple way is to just remove the rear torrsion bar mount and inspect for cracks in the plastic

Good Luck
