Because it's 12 years old and needs a new fuse or new bulbs or new sensors in the doors.

Thanks but that's my problem. Does it have bulbs or integrated backlight or what? Is it hard to remove? I've checked fuses and all seem good. Sensors in the doors? Thanks

Yes I did. Just pull off the knob in the center of the console, I think it's the temp selector, and you will see the bulb. Access is straight forward but to remove it I used a small piece of tubing that fit snugly over the bulb. I was amazed that the one tiny bulb lit the entire console but it does!
