The first time it happened to me it started after 20 minutes, then took longer and longer. When it is hot it takes over 5 hours for my money sucking ML to start. I have put over $10,000 into my ML and only has 80,000 miles. What a money pit. Will NEVER buy another mercedes that's for sure!

I had the same problem on a 99 ML320. I replaced the crankshaft position sensor ($150 at Autobahn) and problem gone.
Here's a link on how to change it.

Rock Auto has the one pin connector lock or two pin connector lock version at about $80. I got mine from the dealer for $97 two years ago.
However I see that autohausaz.com has the Bosch for the ML for $42. That is a bargain.
If it is the two pin connector lock then look under ML 320 or call them. That one is $54
and is also Bosch. Shiping from AZ to CA is two days. Add an oil filter and it is free shipping if the order is over $50. If you need the two pin version
then it will be over $50 and you won't need to add a filter for the free shipping.

99% of the time the pump is not replaced unless the recalled part leaked so badly that
the pump was damaged. It is things like clamps, hoses and seals that were recalled.
Our third recall for more an improved recall just came a few months ago on a ten year old truck.

O2 sensors.
Oxygen sensors. Buy a cheap code reader, amazong 25 bucks it will remove a LOT of guesse work. I had No hot start. ( after runing a bit it could stall or It would fail to start) ran scanner it gave O2 sensors in all banks ( four of em on ML430) Leanred you can do a BYPAS ofn teh UPSTREAM so outof the four O2 snesors I only had to get new Down stream and use Foulers to by pas the ones before the catalytic converter. I mention this as a LOT of folks though i was crank shaft sensor. I was told that many times. I bought the scanner, took away their gusse work. and saved like 200 buck on repairs.
