Manual shift gear locked

In my 2005 ML 350 The shift gear is not releasing from the park position. Few days ago the engine light was on but I think it came from the gas cap not closed properly. After few start up the light went off but still not able to release the shift from the park position. No more light in my dashboard. When I forced the locking position, the truck run with no problem till I put it back in park and stock again. Any ideas? Thanks

Likely that its a bad brake light switch. This controls the release of the shifter when the brake is depressed. Should be a simple fix. Just do not use an aftermarket swith and be certain you get the correct part number as there are several flavors.

ML320, Looking for my S4
You can stick a pen down in the little hole near the D gear and it'll unlock. However, you will not have brake lights.
