How does the Road side assist button and emergency button work?

Hey, I recently got a 2004 ML500 had it less than 6 months now. I'm not sure how the two buttons work on top next to the light buttons. The road side assistance button and emergency SOS button i guess? Do i need a subscription with MB for those to work or they just work? Also, how can i connect a phone to the dash board screen and navi? I know it says telephone, but how does that work?
Thanks for all the info guys, i tried to look up if there was a thread like that already, couldnt find any.

Yes, you must suscribe to the Teleaid service for the buttons mentioned to work. The "telephone" button is for an integrated phone that is in your case a MB Cell phone made by Motorola and modified for MB that snaps into a cradle in the center consol arm rest. Do not believe that MB sells this cradle set up any longer. I have a phone from my 06 that may work if you can find a cradle and wiring harness some place. They now use Bluetooth which is standard and works with lots of phones.

My understanding is that the TelAid system in the W163 ML's are obsolete, do not work and are not supported. They used the old analog cell phone system. The Mercedes cell phone used with the MCS system is also outdated but may still work in some areas.

[I] believe the later W163's Teleaid is digital. Believe it was in the 02 that I had but not certain. As for the phone, the early ML's had analog phones I had this in my 98. I believe in my 02 it was digital but not a sim card phone and thus some carriers may not activate it. I am certain that in the 06 ML500 I had both teleaid and phone were digital.

on my 02

it was a motorola v60s that it came with, and it's a CDMA phone, only AT&T, and no sim card. MB sells a bluetooth puck that goes in place of it now...
