ML430 Power Steering Pump
I'm new to the forum and am a decent weekend mechanic. I'd would like to know if replacing a power steering pump on a 2000 ML430 is something I should tackle. The local shop wants to charge me $700 for the pump and 2-hours of shop time. Pumps are available on line for half the price and I have a free weekend to do the work. Besides, it would be theraputic work for me. Does anyone have some instructions they are willing to share? Are there any issues or special tricks I should know about? Any recommendations has to where to buy a replacement pump on-line?

As long as you have the tools it's easy. E12 socket and gear wrench...or 10mm socket will work, 17mm for the belt tensioner, E10 socket for the res. It's only held on by 4 bolts. @ hour labor is about average, without diag of course.

Not for the pump...only for the return power steering hose from the rack to the cooler. Also the first recall was for the clamp only, which was superseded
by the recall to replace both hose and clamp.
by the recall to replace both hose and clamp.

MBtech1098, exactly the recall was for hoses and clamps, not for the pump. FWIW, I bought my pump for my 2000 ML320 from ebay (bmwmercedesauto)...new not rebuilt although obviously not "starred"...
