Shocks for an ML, what's the difference? 163-320-23/24-13

Looking at new Shocks for my 99 ML, whats the difference between 163-320-23-13 AND 163-320-24-13? I know the later chassis code vehicles call for the 163-320-23-13 but what is the difference between the two?

Different shock valving?
Different spring rate?
Different ride height?

The front shocks are also different by 1 number for the same chassis codes. Would like to know the difference.

I too would like to know the difference between the 1633202313 and 1633202413 shocks. I have a chance to purchase "23" locally but I have early (1998 production date) ML430 and, according to dealer, it needs "24". I read at forums that some opening needs to be drilled out bigger in order for "23" to fit into early production ML. Can someone confirm that? Can someone confirm that "23" are newer and have updated valving thus making the ride softer? I think I read that info on Wolfgang's page but he didn't clarify newer shocks fitments into older MLs. Please help!

Yes I believe it is on the lower control arm... needs to be drilled. I don't recommend doing this but you can try at your own risk.
