Upgrading from CD to DVD Navigation

Can someone who has upgraded from CD to DVD navigation tell us about their experience? Other than the obvious advantage of having the whole country on one disc, are there other advantages? Also, are there any downsides? How much did the entire upgrade process cost? I'm thinking of upgrading the CD navigation system in my 2002 ML500. Thanks.

dvd nav is incredible

I have a dvd nav in my 2003 ml320 and to be quite honest, It beats the hell out of regular cd nav. Not only is it faster, but I can navigate my way across the country without changing cds. It is also faster, and has more recent roads, not to mention it is alpine based which means it is much more accurate than the previous generation nav.

I dont know if the previous gen on the ml had it but you can search for a destination by phone # all over the country. I sell these at my shop for $1700 with the dvd included.

Yes, you can. But...

I installed a DVD Nav in my ML350 over the weekend and it worked great - except that it did not audio prompts (see 5/2 posting). Sosh and Benza replied to my post that the dealer would have to program (version code) my MCS to recognize the new DVD Nav. Sosh said that same thing is true for 2002 MLs. The dealer charged me $56.00 - Benza says they are not suppose to do that. I think CD drive in your MCS could be easily replaced by a DVD drive: $1,076.00 + 250 DVD map (this is about the cheapest after weeks of search) from Clairparts.com call 781-688-1121. Ask for Kevin.

But, do you need to do that? I just went to the NavTech website, maker of the MB DVD maps, to check if there is any difference in the maps of the DVD and CD versions. I think its very minimal. Its all the same towns covered, although there might me a few roads here and there that changed. Since I am not travelling a lot, across 2 or more states for that matter, and highways does not change so very often, if I have the CD Nav I will just keep it until they really really improve the DVD map coverage. I'm happy with my DVD but not very very happy. It will take me a long time to replace mine.
