Rear view mirror self destructed
Hi,
We have a 1999 ML430 and yesterday the interior rear view mirror cracked and it appears some of the liquid inside it has leaked into the housing. From researching this and other forums it appears that this is a common problem. So far, other than a new mirror from the dealer I haven't found another solution. The dealer quoted me $610.00 for a new mirror so I don't want to do that.
Our mirror only has the button on the bottom that activates the dimming function. There are no other light or switches on it. It is black in color.
Can anyone suggest another solution?
Thanks,
Jim

$25 solution
take it apart, take out all the internals...go to a mirror/glass shop, get them to cut a piece glue it in, and put it back together.
Sure no more dimming, but really, is it worth $600? How much longer you gonna keep the car anyways....

All the liquid leaked out of mine as well. I went on eBay and found someone selling one. I think I paid around $100. Independent shop replaced it for less than $50 labor.
Go look on eBay.

After much searching around I found out that there's a company called Sybesma's Electronics that 'repairs' these mirrors. They are located in Michigan and I now have a new one on the way for the princel;y sum of $98.00. The cost also covers the return of my defective mirror to them when the new one arrives.
They can be contacted at ;
Sybesma’s Electronics

When you talk to them they send you an email with a return authorization form to fill out. When returning the form you also have to send photos of the defective mirror. (I think this is primarily to ensure that they send you the correct replacement.) Once they have those they ship the new mirror out and you have to return the defective unit to them.
All in all, a pretty slick process and much better than $600++ at the dealer.
By the way, removing the mirror on the ML430 just requires unplugging the two wire harness and then twisting the base through 90 degrees. I had to grip the base with a cushioned pliers as it was stiff.
