Power Steering Leak - Drive or tow to dealership?

I see where the leak is in the return hose. Dealer said it is covered by the recall but won't cover towing. The reservoir is low but I refilled it and it leaks out pretty fast with the engine on. Am I ok driving 2 miles to the dealer? I would refill the reservoir before I go. I'd like to save $100+ on towing if possible.

If it's leaking that fast, just call your insurance company and pay the $20 for a tow (or just pay it out of pocket). Could you get away with it for two miles? Probably. I don't see why you'd want to risk it though. :2cents:

Towing was covered in my case when I had exactly the same problem. I think your dealer is wrong re towing costs.

My tow cost about $100 and they paid up.

Do not drive it or start the engine as you'll do damage to the pump or worst case ignite the fluid.

Get it towed but get MBUSA to cover the cost - as indeed they should as it's a critical safety recall.

I sold my ML shortly after the recall was performed - our hose failed on a curve at 50MPH and my wife nearly had a major accident as a direct result. If it wasn't for a convenient run out it could have got ugly.

Dealer insisted the recall doesn't cover towing. I contacted another dealer and they told me the same thing. I considered taping off the hose but was a bit weary that the dealer would deny the repair if I altered anything. I ended up paying for towing and it's already been repaired and picked up. They said if it happens again for whatever reason the recall would cover it again. BTW: I was able to find a place that towed it for $50.
