New GPS up and running
Got the Streets 2003 Delorme GPS up and running on the notebook. Seems dead on. Within 1 mph tracking speed, only 2 second delay. Refresh rate seems to be close to what Deluo stated (1 second) and it COMPLETELY FREAKS ME OUT as to how it follows me. Cool toy. Used it for work over the Easter weekend and loved it.

The Easter Bunny's a B**CH of a boss
lol...nope, I'm self-employed which means I never have a day off. Worked Saturday and took a few hours Sunday to re-introduce myself to my wife and kids.

What kind of GPS receiver did you get?
Did you get the Delorme Earthmate (USB Version) GPS receiver? Was it easy to install and set-up your laptop-based navigation system?

GPS
I purchased the Deluo universal USB receiver. Delorme was out of stock and the refresh rateon the Deluo is faster, plus it's about $40 less.
The sound on the voice commands is a little low, but wit hthe radio off, I can hear it fine. The notebook has a good sound card, thankfully.
Put a little velcro tag on the back of the screen and the receiver stays put nicely.

ACCIDENT
That thought has crossed my mind more than once. It is really hard not to watch the screen. I guess it's just newbie habit. I'll learn to listen more than watch real quick, especially in traffic. Just be happy I'm not playing DVD's on the move.
Garmin has released a beta version of a new PDA with full GPS mapping. I'm trying to track it down to see what the story is. Read a brief on it in Motor Trend and look forward to that. It is a great alternative to installing the DVD system in dash or chance smashing a good notebook trying to miss a woodchuck at 80 mph.

I am using the Destinator NAV on my Ipaq 3630. It works really good. The only thing is that you need a large storage card if you want to do a long interstate trip to load several maps. It comes with maps for all US and Canada. Otherwise it is just great. The screen zooms out at high speeds to show more of the terrain. It has a 3D view of the map, but I prefer the regular. Maps are by NAVTECH. There is a rich database of Points of Interests. It chooses fastest or shortest roads. When choosing fastest in NY it always chooses tunels over bridges so unless you want to pay up you will check the manouvers function which is like turn by turn directions. Overall I like it a lot and it's very simple to use. the best way to point to an address is through Zipcodes. I was looking like crazy for Brooklyn but found only New York (Kings County) which is Brooklyn. I will try to video tape it or take pics of it in action.
I plan on building a car pc or "carputer" as they call it and will get a laptop version of destinator for that purpose.
