ML 55 broke transmission...

I was pulling a car out of the snow when something snapped somewhere in the tranny.
I was using the low range because the other car was quite stuck.
It just made a bang and wouldnt hardly move after that.
I was able to link aside with just small throttle.
Though backwards it "engages" a little better.

The sound (sympton) is like as if you havent completely stopped, and was a little bit fast with the parking postition on the shifter.
Like a tugging noise almost like it is waiting to rev down to be able to put a sprint in a hole....
And if it gets a couple of seconds it like "engages"...?
But you don't want to touch the throttle almost at all because then it pops out again with a bang!
In a flat surface I'm able to move but not more.

No axles are turning if you look under the car (at a standstill...).

What do you think this could be?
Is it the transfer box (the 4-wheel-drive box)?
Or is it something with the low range coupling?

And is it possible to change this by yourself (I've been doing cars for many years).
Or do you need a lot of special tools?

Kindly /Peter

ML 55
Just drained the transfer box.
It was a glittering shine from the oil....
And when I inserted a magnet through the drain hole I got a complete metal-salad with me out....!

I would guess that COULD be the reason for my problems...
So what do you think about this?
Is it renewable or is it just to try to get another one?
I will dismantle it tomorrow.

And is it same transfer box on any other ML besides ML 55?

Is this a common problem on these cars?
