Trailer lights

I feel like a light-weight with this question, but no answers have been found so far.

2011 ML550 with factory towing package. I rented a u-haul to take some stuff from CA to AZ - about 400 miles. The trailer lights flashed all the way. No real turn signal, probably no brake lights. I was using a standard 7 blade adapter to a flat four-pin.

The manual says use the MB adpater -- I used a recent one purchased for a 2009 GMC Acadia which I ditched. Is there something special about the MB adapter. Loads different or something?

Anyone have a similar experience or solution? I haven't been able to find the MB adapter.

The adapter should have been provided as part of the towing package, at least it was with my 02 320. Used it for many different trailers over the years and never had an issue with functionality.
