ML430 Kickdown won't work

ML430 Kickdown won't work
I have a 1999 ML430 Merc. However i have noticed that the kickdown doesn't work. Even if i hold my foot clicking in the kickdown switch nothing happens, the engine stays in the same gear and keeps slowly acellerating. Its actually rather dangerious.
I have also noticed that its rather sluggish for a 4.3L V8, i used to drive a 2001 X5 4.4L and it was that much quicker ( from a standstill proabably about the same, however mid range, if a plant my foot not much happens). However maybe its just me.
Has anybody else had these problems in relation to kick down and a sluggish motor?
