Cannot ID silver thing sticking out of brake
Hey guys. Stuck again. I have a 2001 or so ML320 and I recently noticed that the silver pin shaped like a W started sticking out of the rear caliper. Last week, it actually stuck out at least two to three inches and we pushed it back in, but had the dealer examine it. They told us it was nothing important and said they replaced it for free with a new one while also charging us $1500 on something that supposedly would've been very hazardous if we didn't. It hasn't even been a week and it is already starting to stick out again. Can anyone tell me what this is, and it's importance? Thanks!

It's just a shim between the caliper arm and the disk pads to help the pad slide back and forth smoothly. Remove the disk pads, pry it (the shim) out and crimp it a bit to tighten its grip and hammer it into the caliper arm.
