Take off the shifter cover and look inside and see if there are any signs of sticky liquid.
Remove the arm rest lid.
Remove stowage box.
Pry off shifter trim.
Remove window switch module.

When you tap the shifter to the negative side and hold it there, does the instrument cluster show the lower gear, but when you release it it returns to the "D" position?
If that is the case you have a problem with the electronic shifter circuit. I you want, you can remove the shifter, disassemble it and clean the board with electronic contact cleaner. I still say there was some spillage before you bought the truck which is preventing proper contact inside the shifter.
