DIY oil change

Is there a favored/recommended brand of oil filter for a 2002 ML500? Or should I purchase from the dealer?

Some say the fleece ones are better because they last longer.

To me, it doesn't matter how long it lasts. What matters is how often you are changing the oil.

Question: Does it matter if you use Crest, Colgate, or Aim?
No. As long as you brush twice daily.

How can you say it doesn't matter when different filters have different oil flow rates and filter a different amount of particles?

Stick with the oem filter, but you don't have to get it from a dealer, you can find it cheaper online.

From mbusa.com:

•The materials and processes used in the manufacture of our filters are of the highest quality, no compromises or shortcuts have been made.
•Genuine Mercedes-Benz filters withstand heat, pressure, and moisture better than off-brands which may not have been subjected to durability testing.

The use of a Genuine Mercedes-Benz Fleece Oil Filter helps ensure optimum engine lubrication and maximized fuel efficiency. Hazardous dirt particles, as small as 0.005 mm are filtered out consistently and at very high filtration rates. As a result, clean oil is fed to the engine, thereby considerably extending its service life.

Further advantages to using Genuine Mercedes-Benz fleece oil filter include:

•The ability to absorb 20% more dirt than a conventional paper filters
