Question remote not responding

I have 2000 ML430 with the remote not working.
I did change the batteries. It didn’t help.
I tried to synchronize the remote as per the Owner’s Manual:
Insert the key into the ignition.
Start the vehicle.
Turn it off.
Remove the key.
Hold the LOCK button down while pressing the UNLOCK button 5 times.

This procedure didn’t help either.

I read on the forums regarding this issue and is suggests to:
1) reprogram via SDS;
2) replace and reprogram the All Activity Module

Questions:
1) I wonder what exactly needs to be programmed via the SDS?
2) If all the other features of the truck working fine, can it still be the AAM module fault?

My 17 years old son has 2002 ML500 and same problem after changed the batteries.

I did all steps that you did except turn key to POS 2 (I did not start engine)

It worked.

I actually tried both scenarios: without starting the car and with. In both cases no result.
