Speed-sensative noise in the middle of the truck
Hey everyone,
I hope you're all having a great Christmas and holiday season. Just wanted to thank everyone on this forum as I'm not the most handy person but reading up on your DIY's are super helpful for working on my 2004 ML350. For example, I recently changed the transfer case fluid following a DIY, my truck runs much better and surprisingly, at about 500rpm lower than before.
My only gripe with it now is this noise I've had ever since I purchased it about 4 years ago. So far, I've diagnosed that it is completely speed-sensative as I've tried placing the car in neutral and letting it cruise by itself downhill. The noise level was about the same. Its audible once the car gets going and seems to get more constant as the speed builds up. By about 50mph, it goes away as I think engine and wind noise take over. I'm hesitant on calling it a grinding noise but its more than a hum. Its a bit of a "roar," hard to describe for sure. The sound seems to originate from the middle of the car right on top of the gear select and armrest area.
After doing some searching, I think it might be the center support bearing(?) I just wanted to get a few more opinions before taking it to an Indy and asking him to swap it out.
Thanks in advance for the help and thanks again for all the great work you guys have done on here.
