2001 ml 320 transmission torque converter seal?

130k miles. Had truck 3 days no problems. Exiting highway as trany shifts down clunk. Pull into parking space, puddle of transmission fluid under car. Had it towed home and looked at by my mechanic. He says he is sure after removing housing, it must be leaking from torque converter seal. He said tranny must be dropped to change seal. Is there any other probable point of leak in that area under housing? Fluid poors out once you start engine, how likely is it the pump or torque converter itself?

Start the engine & see were is the leak. You dont even know 100% what fluid ie leaking. It could be one of your transmission hoses, it could be power steering system leaking, It could be anything......Determine the exact location of the leak.

definetly transmission fluid so says AAMCO and indy mechanic and definetly coming from under housing. AAMCO is claiming trans needs to be rebuilt, doubt that and he is basing that because fluid is dark. I guess my question better stated would be could a bad pump or torque converter be making that fluid drip rapidy and not the the seal? I realize no one can say for sure until they pull the trans, but jus wondering probability. Reason being, if front pump or torque converter, warranty. If just torque converter seal, out of my pocket! thanks Art!

If the transmission is leaking it doesnt mean it needs to be rebuilt. Fluid gets dark that is normal. Read the PDF I have posted. You leak could be as simple as the Transmission pan gasket. I think that is what you meant saying housing. It could be the 13 pin electrical connector leaking. Or a hose broken. Or your drain plug. I would have a indy who you can trust to check it properly & independently. The problem here is you (yourself) dont know exactly the location/reason of the leak, so any shop would want to take you for a drive & charge you mega$$$$ for nothing. A lot of things can be repaired on the tranny by yourself if you are a DIYer
PS . You dont need to pull down the tranny to diagnose the problem.

Thanks Art. You are right. AAMCO is definetly in scam mode. So far all I know is underneath bell housing. Took it to an indy shop to find exact cause of leak. They worked on my 500 Sl and the guy there works on nothing but MB. He was familiar with that AAMCO and told me they were trying to gouge me. I hope all i have to do is replace that front main seal and change filter to get me running. Labor is still gonna be an issue. He says rough shift and hesitation most likely from low fluid level due to leak. Started it up yesterday, drove to shop down the street in first, no codes. I will report back the final prognosis when i get it.
Peace Art, and keep your fingers crossed for me!
