Open your bonnet and from the top look down on the radiator & the Aux Fans(the ones in front of the radiator). There must be a rubber covering the gap between them. From one end of the radiator to the other. It is #9 in the pdf

thank you for your help...should the part fit back in there without taking the whole thing apart?...based on the diagram it looks like the whole thing came out and is not broken in pieces

Art, that's not the same part. The OPs part has a different cross-section, is shorter, and appears to have been moulded as a semicircle.
It looks like something unique to M113 (ML430, ML500 & ML55) engines.

it is not that air baffle part and there is no number stamped on it...looking at it closer one edge of it appears torn/cut similar to the ends...could it be part of a cowling?...could it be a piece of debris kicked up off the road and have nothing to do with my car?

I believe that the mystery part may be a cowling/gasket/baffle that fits between the front fans and the radiator but I cant find it on any diagram...any thoughts?

Out Of Control!!
looks like a piece of road debris. I had my 55 apart many times and never found anything like that.

mystery part solved?...is it the rubber bushing/spacer on the crank shaft pulley...i just replaced the tensioner and idler pulley and in the process found that the crank pulley is set back about 1/4 inch and does not line up with the other pulleys...its causing the belt to rub against the tensioner mount housing...looks like my water pump bearing is going out too...there is a bit of play in it

half the rubber bushing is pictured above and i presume that the other half is on the road someplace...i could not see any rubber on the pulley and the outer part with the belt grooves is pulled back about 1/4 toward the engine...i dont understand why they would design such a beautiful car and then make the main drive pulley so delicate...i read a number of threads from 10 years ago on this forum...it seems this is a common problem with the m112 and m113 engines...
any idea how hard it will be to pull that pulley off the crank shaft? i am hoping it wont be too much of a *****...im also going to replace the water pump (it has some slop/play in it) as long as i have the thing torn apart...
