ML GOD --> ESP question

ML GOD --> ESP question
Hey there ML GOD,
Question on ESP. I'm not sure if they go out of calibration or anything but today, I was taking a corner (with snow on the ground) and decided to test out ESP on the ML versus the S500. So I hit the gas and the rear starts to come around, i'm like, wtf, where's ESP. Then I cut the wheel the other way to counter the skid then ESP starts flashing and I can hear the brakes working.
Is this normal or does ESP need service?
Usually on the S, if I'm trying to fish tail it with ESP, it cuts in before the tail ever comes around.

I have yet to "test" the ESP on my ML yet. I'm too afraid!!! Don't want to roll her over or something stupid like that!!!
I test the ESP in my CLK55 all the time, of course its usually on dry roads!

BTW, i wonder if this is could have saved us from an accident a few years ago when we first got the car. We were going down a hilly road and at the bottom was a curve. We slowly took the curve, but it was very slippery. The car just kept going forwards even with the wheel turned and ABS going, the right side of the car plowed onto a small median and took out a street sign. Damaged both right side doors and the chrome side runner (went under the car). I don't remember seeing the ESP light flashing...
