Drivetrain Looseness

Drivetrain Looseness
I drove the wife’s 2004 ML350 about a month ago and noticed that there was a little slippage in the drivetrain. Almost like one wheel was spinning a ¼ revolution before the others would move. Today I drove it again and besides the sensation of slippage under initial acceleration I can feel it happening the other way as I near a stop as well. It’s almost as though the drivetrain is not connected tightly to the chassis, or that something in the drivetrain is loose. Imagine a wood block in a small plastic container that gently hits against either side of the container as you first accelerate or come to a stop.
The truck has 63,000 miles on it and aside from terrible brakes has no major issues. The torsion bars were replaced about a year ago and the transmission works fine. The sensation of slipping is only at starts and stops.
Any ideas before I head to the dealer I vowed to never return to with my tail between my legs?
