Ml 320 Huge Appetite For Synthetic Oil

ML GOD,

My 1999 ML320 burns about 1qt of oil every 1K to 1.2k miles. The dealer says that's well within normal limits. This is the first vehicle I have ever owned with such an appetite. I owned a 1997 E420 which did not burn any oil between oil changes which were performed every 7.5k miles.
My ML320 has 65K miles. Is this problem going to get worse?

Thats excessive oil consumption. Did it start suddenly or build up to that rate of consumption over a period of time?? For the record the 98 ML I had, my current ML500 and my current E320 have never required any oil between changes as indicated by the FSS. The guy that bought my 98 now has over 165000 miles on it and claims no oil consumption.

A qt. of oil every 1K is excessive, that means that if you change oil every 7.5K, you would have no oil left between oil changes.
If you have no oil leaks, check the compression, and if it's low, most likely you'll need piston rings.

I called Mercedes Benz & they told me to go back to the dealer because the amount of oil it is burning is within the engine specifications.

it seems that some members here have the same prob w/ the ML eating oil. I too had a problem...about every 3k after an oil change or just out of the blue, the oil light would flicker for about 2 seconds then shut off. It doesn't stay lit constantly. So I checked the oil and it was down 1 quart.

Put it in, no problems till oil change. I asked the dealer to check it out and they did a consumption test...everything was normal and for the ML to eat 1 quart every few thousand miles is "normal" within MB's specs.

My '94 w202 with 138k miles doesn't even eat oil (no need to add any at all between 5k intervals)! But they said they couldn't do anything cuz it was within MB's spec...so every now and then, the light will flicker and i'll just check and add if necessary. Usually when the light blinks, it's down at the min line on the stick.

Yep! That would be the quick answer.....!

If it's normal, why would they tell you take it back to the dealer?
