Do I really need a spark plug removal tool?

I tried replacing the spark plugs for my 98 ML 320 but it seems hard to pull those wires off. I didn't want to pull so hard that I might break something.

So, do I really need the tool or not? If not, how did you guys do it. I'll try to post a step by step write-up when I figure stuff out.

2000 ML 320
I need to replace my plugs too. Nearing that 100,000 mile mark. I have no idea how to get those wires off either so I'm kinda anxious to see what you have in your write-up. Keep us posted please.

For anyone that is interested:
Plug replacement-ML series
Engine must be cold!!
Required Tools: Spark Plug Socket-5/8" S9706KQ Snap-On or equiv.
Short extension 3/8" drive 3"
Short extension 3/8" drive 1"
Flex connection 3/8" drive Opt.
Ratchet 3/8" drive 12" or suitable-SK 45875 or similar
12 or 16 Bosch F8DPER or equiv
Anti-Sieze compound, Fel Pro or equiv.
WD-40 or equiv.
Remove only the air box cover and tube to MAF sensor on the right side of the engine for clearance.
Coil packs are located below the outside edge of the black engine covers L&R. Each coil has 2 plug wires on it A&B, note which is on forward or aft plug, either mark the wires or remove only one at a time. Do not interchange the wires! Rotate the silver cover to free boot and pull to remove-do not pull on wire. Remove the spark plugs, one at a time or all on one side if you marked the wires.
Gap new plugs or at least check at .032" or .8mm, add a small amount of anti-sieze to threads only, will short electrodes if you overlap it, also keep it off the insulator. Tighten by hand and then approx. 3/4 turn with the wrench-about 15-20 ft/lbs
Do not overtighten! you or someone else will hate yourself the next time....Return the boots carefully with a small amount of WD-40 on them to help seat them and keep out water. Do not use anti sieze on the boots, it will short them out.
Caution Do not overtighten
Try to keep dirt and dust,from around plugs-You have an open hole to the inside of the engine!
Do not force a plug that will not loosen, add WD-40 to the thread area, or Free-all, Marvel, or equiv., come back to it later.
Helps to wear a pair of Mechanix gloves, makes it easier to pull boots, saves your hands.

1998 ML320 + 1985 AE86
use a 17mm open allen wrench as leverage/pry the boots out.

It worked like a charm for me ....
