2000 ML320 722.6 Transmission Shifting issues

Recently my ML has been suffering from transmission issues. Upshifts are normal, except it will not shift into 5th gear until well over 60mph regardless of throttle position and grade. When manually upshifted, it goes into 5th fine. It downshifts okay until the 2nd to 1st shift, which is very harsh and has an audible clunk. The fluid level is fine and the fluid is in good condition. There is an intermittent code in ETC for an atf temperature sensor, however this issue happens whether the code is present or not. I replaced the pilot bushing due to minor leakage a short while ago and at that time the leak had not yet entered the wiring harness or come anywhere near the ETC module. Would replacing the conductor plate help my situation? Maybe a new valve body? Or is it toast?

Try the following reset procedure:

All doors closed.

  1. Turn the key to position 2. You should see all the dash lights come on.
  2. Press the gas pedal all the way to the floor engaging the kick down sw. & hold.
  3. Wait 10 sec.
  4. Turn key to OFF, position 0.
  5. Release the gas pedal.
  6. Wait 2 minutes.
  7. Start the car and drive.
