Question 99 ML320 leaking transfer case

Whilst changing out the snow tires for the summer, I took a close look at the transmission - since it has always been somewhat noisy - but I think a little more so of late.

I noticed that fluid has been leaking from the front drive shaft seal at the transfer case. It took about 3/4pt to top up. Given that the 98 has a history of problems in this area. Should I be worried or just keep a eye/ear on it?

Also is it likely to just be the seal that is defective or a bearing?

There has not been any drops of oil on the garage floor and the vehicle has been owned since new in 99 and covered 45k.

i think there was something with the driveshaft bearing that my SA mentioned about. It's a few cases, but ask your SA about it...may be covered by MBUSA.

Just a bad seal. The only promblem is you have to remove the transfer case and split the case to change that seal. It's not that hard but there are a couple of special tools you need

Thumbs up

Thanks for the info.

After topping up the transfer case fluid the transmission is SIGNIFICANTLY quieter. Hopefully not much internal wear occured. - Other people might want to keep an eye and ear on theirs.....

I can live with keeping an eye on it for now - if the leak becomes too bad - at least I know what is involved.

Thanks

Just had the dealer take a look at my leaking transfer case....
Lucky.....still covered under warranty....

Looked like a front seal. They didn't say whether or not they'll be repairing it or replacing the transfer case.

Goes in Next Friday....for Rear Shocks....apparently still under warranty.

2000km before the warranty is up.......now things are starting to happen....lol! Even Gas gauge is acting up.

It's been good to me, though........Nice Ride!!
