Strange whining noise from the steering column when it's hot (youtube link)
Hello my MBWorld friends,
2004 ML350 makes this strange light whining noise coming from the steering column. This only happens when the engine is well warmed up/hot, or the weather is hot. If the weather is really cold, the noise won't happen.
I lifted the front-end and started turning the steering wheel first and front wheels by hands. The vehicle is already warm/hot.
The steering fluid is full and I have turned the wheels left/right 20 times.

No problem with the steering while driving. If the engine is running, I can't even hear the noise from outside because of the engine noise. The noise seems like coming from the steering column. The question is why occurs when it's hot?

First get an ear swab with Vaseline on it and lubricate the area between the end of the steering wheel and the beginning of the steering column covers.
You might want to remove the cover under the Inst. Panel and get on your back while someone turns the steer. wheel and spray the knuckle with WD40.
If neg. results, do the same to the knuckle in the eng. compartment.
