so, I bought an MB scanner here are my stored codes:
- B1099, CAN bus: communication control:FBM
- B1642-000, left headlamp dim light:discontinuity, short circuit positive
- B1041, CAN bus: communication control:ESP/ETS
- P164300, not found in database
- B1086, CAN bus communication control: AAM

thats all (i guess headlamp is due to me removing it to get to the traction control module) any ideas what to do next? thanks

Your problem is with the headlamp and not with the ESP Module.. I could not find any of the code numbers in any of the 163 modules, but it is clear that the CAN system is having a problem.

Disconnect the left headlamp, and clear the codes and see if any codes return.

Do you have stock headlamps installed?

sorry, probably ignore the above codes, first time I've used a scanner. i've done a fairly comprehensive scan now, and the issue(current codes) look like the traction control module is not working at all. all other faults link back to the traction control system not giving any signal to the CAN bus.
most relevant I think is that my MB scanner tool (iscansoft mb2) when I go to scan 'Traction Systems ABS,ASR,ETS,ESP' I get the response 'fault in communication'
and other systems all seem fine except for codes relating to lack of CAN communication from ETS.

relevant codes are:
P2001 - component N15/3 (ETC control module) is faulty
P2310 - one or more messages from control unit N47 (traction control module) are not available on the CAN bus
P1876 - communication with traction system CAN bus interfered
B1040-001 - Can bus communication contol ETS
P2203-001 - external quantity control by esp no communication
p2203-032 - External quantity contol by esp request from control module esp in implausible
P0500-001 - vehicle speed singnal CAN data are invalid

the only one that seems rogue is this one:
B1040-000 - CAN bus:communication control:ME engine electrical component

Lastly, the transmission reads (live data from scanner, running but parked in the driveway)
- vehicle speed at front axle 339kmh
- vehicle speed at rear axle 339kmh

Your problem is with the ETC Control Module, Transmission Module, and it must be replaced.

Remove it and copy down the number 163 545 xx xx and find a used one in a junk yard or on the internet, but it must be for that exact number and must be right hand drive.

As long as it is used, it will be plug and play.

In the US market the module is located on the left hand side, but I do not know where it is located on RHD veh.

Remove both covers under the I.C. and follow the instructions in the PDF. After installing it, clear all codes and re-scan. All the other codes have been stored because the ETC cannot communicate with the other modules.

I would LOVE to see a wiring diagram for the Traction Control module. that way I can buzz out the loom to test for continuity as my issue possibly wiring. otherwise I imagine I need to change the ESP module for a new one.

Does anyone have wiring diagrams for the w163?

do you think these codes are relative to the ETC control Module too?
I was suspecting the ESP module on the abs pump instead

P2310 - one or more messages from control unit N47 (traction control module) are not available on the CAN bus
P1876 - communication with traction system CAN bus interfered
B1040-001 - Can bus communication control ETS
P2203-001 - external quantity control by esp no communication
p2203-032 - External quantity contol by esp request from control module esp in implausible
P0500-001 - vehicle speed signal CAN data are invalid

The code P2001 ETC Control Module is faulty, clearly calls for replacement of the module.

The codes you just posted are CAN problems because the ETC cannot communicate with other modules.

I believe the part sticker is on the outside of the module. You just have to locate it and copy down the number.

I replaced the ETC module, no change, car was still in limp, with no speedo, no brake lights, and lots of dash warning lights. the wrecker let me take it back (with restocking fee) and I have now replaced esp module on the abs pump. everything is back to normal, speedo and brake lights are working, gears change no problem, and the car now drives as it should, however the esp/bas light is still on.
I have tried the turn full left and full right a few times trick, and the esp/bas light is still on.
I can't find a relevant fault with my MB2 scanner, however I do have a stored fault p1925, Drive authorisation has been refused by control module N15/5 (Electronic selector lever module(ESM[EWM])) DTC status 'stored'.
when I cancel this fault, it simply comes back as 'stored', never 'current and stored'.

any idea's?
thanks.

ESP system has its own codes starting with "C". If your scanner is not able to read "C" codes then the problem will still remain until they are cleared.

If you only have a cheap code reader, it will not do.

Old thread, but did this ever get resolved?? It looks like the ESP (Traction Module) is at fault from what I can tell. The ESP (4ETS) Module is in the E-Box and is located directly next to the ME (Engine Computer). The module on the ABS pump is actually the ABS Module... Lots of confusion going on in this thread lol

Yes resolved. After replacing the esp module on the abs pump everything went back to normal (speedo, gears, and lights ect.). The Esp/Bas light was still on, and could not be reset, however the esp and abs were definitely still working despite the warning light. I drove it for about 10,000km just with that warning light illuminated, then changed the brake pads, and was able to clear that last fault. Cost of parts was about $150(Australian), cost of time was maybe 30 hours of finding the problem, then 2 hours of actually changing the part that was faulty. I learnt a lot in the process. The car (ML270) now has 295,000km and has been completely fault free since this issue.

This happened to me!!

Hi all, new to the forum I'll find the intro thread shortly.

The op's original description happened to my ml this morning IE many warning lights and the lack of a Speedo.
Hoping to find it's just a German gremlin trying to escape I switched the car off for a minute. The fault cleared and I was able to get it home ready for investigation.
I know the water bottle hasn't been leaking but we did have a large amount of rain last night and I had the nerve to drive my 4x4 through a small puddle. Do we think this may have caused the old girls hissy fit?

Kind regards,
Ben
