Unhappy Fuel Gauge

Has any body else noticed that the fuel gauge needle never reads full or is that my ML430 is faulty. I always make sure that is full at the gas stn, but the gauge does not reflect this, it reads like 95% full or something.

Fuel gauge

I had the same problem on my ML270 on dleivery.

Ten minutes in the shop, and it has always worked correctly and accurately.

The fuel float was not changed, it was purely a set up calibration.

This seems to be a common Mercedes problem and for that matter a problem with several makes of German cars. I had it twice in my 98 ML320 and once on my 01 E320 4Matic. In each instance the fuel sender was replaced and it worked OK then. I have not (yet) had this on my 02 ML500.

Fuel Guage

I had a similar problem which I never reported to the dealer. I told them about the potential fuel pump problem, and to upgrade me to the large capasity fuel filter, but instead they replaced the entire fuel pump. Since then, the fuel guage has been corrected.

Hope this is helpful.

2002 CLK 55 AMG Coupe ;)
Had same problem with my 2001 SL500. Fuel sending unit replaced was replaced,- still no FULL fuel reading.

That was just one of many electronic/electrical problems that told me: Get rid of the SL car!

The CLK is almost flawless after 9,000 miles.

Fuel Gauge

I am on my second ML and MB have fixed the problem with the fuel gauge on the 2002 model.

They have also fixed the problem with the gas gun cutting out to early when filling.

On the pre 2002 MLs you could always squeeze in another 1 1/2 gallons... with the 2002 model the gas gun triggers when full...

Also 2002 models have bigger tanks.... but the new fuel cap get in the way when filling.

I find the MPG gauge very accurate, although it does occasionally need re confirguring after quick restarts of the engine.

Londonboy, what did you mean by "MPG gauge very accurate, although it does occasionally need reconfiguring after quick restarts of the engine"? My 2002 ML320 MPG gauge reads 4-5 mpg higher than actual.

fuel gauge

According to TSB # T-SI-MBNA-47.20/05 Dated 1/99
The fuel sending unit resistor card is bad and requires a new fuel sending unit. The fuel sending unit should have a date code of 98217 001 or above. The part order number is T-2706-099. I hope this helps.
